Successful installation and commissioning at COBAR, Australia

The CSA Mine is located in Cobar, Central Western New South Wales, Australia. It is operated by Cobar Management Pty Ltd., a subsidiary of the Glencore Group.

The mine initially commenced in 1871 with an erratic production history until 1964, when Broken Hill South Ltd began large scale production. The mine was taken over by CRA in 1980, and assigned by Golden Shamrock Mines in 1992. Following its acquisition by Ashanti Goldfields, the mine was closed in 1997/98, but subsequently reopened by the new owner Glencore in 1999.

Since 1965, the mine has extracted substantial quantities of zinc, lead, silver and copper. Today, CSA Mine focusses on mining copper and silver as a co-product. The underground mine produces over 1.1 million tonnes of copper ore and more than 185,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per annum. The concentrate, which contains approx. 29 % copper metal, is exported to smelters in India, China and South-East Asia.

Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, CSA Mine provides direct employment for over 300 people, the majority of whom are based in the local township of Cobar. Having already successfully commissioned shaft no. 1 winder by the end of 2017, WINDER CONTROLS Australia has installed and commissioned the tower mounted friction winder at Cobar’s shaft no. 2.

In the first step the old equipment had to be lifted out and some sections of the floor (steel structure & civils) had to be replaced. In the second step the new hoist equipment, engineered by WINDER CONTROLS Australia, was lifted 52 m above ground through the roof of the existing winder house, which had been replaced beforehand. Motor, gearbox and Hydraulic Power Pack were safely lifted into position, installed and commissioned. With an excellent and save performance by our motivated project team of WINDER CONTROLS Australia, we were once more able to fully satisfy our customer.
